Man beaten to death allegedly by TMC workers in West Bengal

A man was beaten to death allegedly by a group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters in Nadia district of West Bengal on Friday night. The incident happened in Birpur village under Nakashipura police station jurisdiction.

The deceased, Khabir Seikh, was a resident of Sarbari area here. As per the reports, the deceased was dragged outside his house by a gang of about 10-12 persons and brutally assaulted and hit with butt of guns, while family members kept pleading for help. Seikh reportedly collapsed after the assault.

The attackers reportedly accused Sikh being involved in ‘anti-national’ activities. All the accused managed to flee from the spot after neighbours started gathering there. Seikh was rushed to a nearby hospital by the neighbours where he succumbed to the injuries.

“Khabir Seikh was an independent activist in the area…therefore he was dragged and beaten to death by TMC workers. We request the police to identify the accused and punish then at the earliest,” said a local resident Usman Seikh.

Police from the Nakashipara have launched an investigation into the case. Police said we will apprehend the accused after identifying them. The deceased had been getting threats since the recently-concluded panchayat elections in state after he worked for an Independent candidate here.

Political violence in Bengal

Death due to political rivalries are not new in the state. In June, a BJP office bearer in Dinhata subdivision of Cooch Behar district was shot dead at his home by some visitors at his home following an altercation. Alleging the role of TMC workers in the murder, party leader Suvendu Adhikari had demanded a CBI probe.

“TMC got scared after hundreds of its activists in the area left to join BJP,” he tweeted.
